Hilo man charged with manslaughter in sports bar death
Hawaii County authorities charged a 21-year-old Hilo man Tuesday afternoon with manslaughter in the death of 44-year-old Roy Williams Jr. of Mountain View.
Waylen Carenio allegedly fought with Williams outside a Hilo sports bar early Saturday morning, police said.
Bystanders flagged down just after 3 a.m. Saturday patrol officers, who found Williams unconscious and lying on the roadway.
Witnesses said he had been in an altercation with another man when he fell to the ground and hit his head on the pavement, police said.
Wiliams was taken to the Hilo Medical Center and later transferred to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he died Sunday evening.
Police initially arrested Carenio on suspicion of second-degree murder Monday, but was charged with the lesser offense Tuesday afternoon.
