Man rescued after kayak flips over in rough seas
A paddleboarder and Hawaii County firefighters rescued a 53 year-old man after he fell out of his kayak in high winds and rough water about 300 yards off shore of Mahukona Beach Park in Hawi Wednesday afternoon.
Hawaii County officials said the kayaker was treading water for about 30 minutes after he lost his kayak when it flipped over. A 38-year-old man on a paddleboard was the first to reach the man. A firefighter also swam out to the man and brought him in through the rough water, according to a news release. The fire department helicopter monitored the rescue.
Firefighters received the call for help at about 4:33 p.m. and arrived on scene at about 4:45 p.m.
The victim refused medical treatment after he was examined by paramedics on the beach.
