Honolulu police traffic investigators were at the scene of a motor vehicle accident which closed Young Street between Palm Drive and Piikoi Street. Investigators said a man dropping off his pet at a business on Young Street pulled out of his parking stall in his car and collided with a man in his 80s traveling west on Young Street on his moped. The moped operator was in critical condition and unresponsive at the scene.

A Toyota pulling out of a curbside parking space struck an 80-year-old man on a mo-ped Monday morning, sending the elderly man to the hospital in critical condition.

Police said the accident happened on Young Street between Palm Drive and Piikoi Street in the Ewa-bound lane at about 10 a.m.

Police said the Toyota, driven by a 55-year-old Honolulu man, pulled out of a parking space in the Ewa lane and struck the mo-ped, driven by an 80-year-old Honolulu man.

The moped rider lost control and was thrown from the mo-ped. He was not wearing a helmet, police said. Paramedics took him to the hospital in critical condition.

Police said the Toyota’s driver submitted to a blood draw and alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash.

Police closed Young Street between Piikoi Street and Palm Drive until about 12:30 p.m. while traffic investigators examined the crash scene.
