2011 January 21 CTY - Marc Alexander, Gov. Neil Abercrombie yesterday appointed Marc Alexander, the former vicar general of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu, as his homeless coordinator.
Marc Alexander, Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s homelessness initiatives coordinator, has resigned effective Friday "to attend to personal matters," Abercrombie’s office said today.
Alexander did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Star-Advertiser.
Abercrombie’s office said "actions to address homelessness" will now be led by the 24-member Hawaii Interagency Council on Homelessness, which Abercrombie created in July by signing an executive order.
With Alexander’s departure, Lynn Heirakuji will serve as interim vice chairwoman of the Hawaii Interagency Council on Homelessness. She is director of Abercrombie’s Hawaii Fair Share Initiative and has worked with Alexander on the 90-Day Plan on Homelessness, Abercrombie’s office said.
"Marc Alexander has done outstanding work as the coordinator in bringing together leaders from throughout the community and this work will continue as a priority," Abercrombie said in a statement. "The time has come to put more structure to this effort. I am pleased that Marc accomplished the coordination aspect of what is now a movement to end homelessness."
In the statement, Alexander was quoted as saying, "It has been an honor to work with Gov. Abercrombie on establishing this mission. Homelessness is not a quick fix, we have established short-term and long-term goals and we are making a positive difference in the lives of individuals who need help."
