Maui firefighters battle refuse truck fire
Maui firefighters put out a county refuse truck fire Tuesday in Haiku.
The fire started in the compactor section of a one-arm, county trash truck on Umi Place about 2:55 p.m., a Maui Fire Department spokesman said.
Firefighters couldn’t put out the fire using the top hatch and the trash had to be dumped. Firefighters extinguished the flames at 3:24 p.m.
A county crew cleaned up the roadway with a loader and a tractor trailer.
The trash truck sustained only cosmetic damage to the paint. The cause of the fire remained unknown.
