Brush fire forces residents from homes in Kona

Hawaii County firefighters planned to work overnight on containing a 35-acre brush fire that came within feet of homes and forced the evacuation of dozens of residents in Kona.

The 2:17 p.m. fire was 95 percent contained by 9 p.m., and firefighters were going put out hot spots overnight along the perimeters, said Hawaii County Fire Department Battalion Chief Aaron Arbles.

"The brush is pretty dry so it was fast moving," Arbles said.

Residents in the Pines neighborhood were evacuated about 4 p.m. because of the smoke and flames and allowed back into their homes about 9 p.m., according to the Hawaii County City Defense Agency. At one point, about 50 people were staying at an evacuation center opened by the American Red Cross at Kekauokalani Gym in Kona.
