A Japanese fisheries training school in Uwajima in Ehime Prefecture held a memorial service today, marking the 11th anniversary of a 2001 collision between its training boat and the USS Greeneville, nuclear submarine, off Hawaii that claimed the lives of nine aboard, Kyodo news reported.

At Uwajima Fisheries High School, about 270 people, including students and relatives of the victims, observed a moment of silence at 8:43 a.m., the exact time when the Pearl Harbor-based submarine collided with the Ehime Maru. A bell retrieved from the sunken ship tolled nine times for the nine victims.

”It was a sad event we don’t want to recall, but we should not forget it,” said school Principal Kanji Nogami during the service at the school gymnasium, the Japanese news service reported.
