Sisto sparkles as Rainbows beat Ducks in opener

Matt Sisto allowed just two singles in seven innings as host Hawaii beat Oregon 4-1 in the season-opening college baseball game for both schools Friday.

A sellout turnstile crowd of 3,553 at Les Murakami Stadium saw Sisto, a senior right-hander, master the Ducks. He struck out five, walked two and hit a batter while throwing 99 pitches.

Jesse Moore got the save after Brent Harrison pitched a scoreless eighth, but allowed three consecutive Oregon singles for the Ducks lone run after two outs in the ninth. Moore allowed a single by Thomas Walker to load the bases, but retired Aaron Payne on a foul fly to leftfielder Kaeo Aliviado to end it.

Hawaii played errorless defense while Oregon was hurt by two errors.

UH led from the third inning, when Breland Almadova reached on an error, stole second and later scored on Collin Bennett’s single to right.

Hawaii got another unearned run in the fifth. Stephen Ventimilia reached first when first baseman Ryon Healy dropped a pop up to start the inning. Ventimilia stole second and advanced to third on Max Duval’s sacrifice bunt. Zack Swasey’s flyout to center was deep enough to plate Ventimilia and give UH a 2-0 margin.

The Rainbows added two in the sixth. Ventimilia walked with the bases loaded. Then Bennett hit a sacrifice fly to center and a 4-0 Hawaii lead.

The series continues with single games tonight, Sunday and Monday.
