Care home operator gets year in prison for $200,000 swindle
An elderly care operator will spend a year in prison for her role in scamming an 84-year-old man out of more than $200,000.
Judge Richard Pollack sentenced 46-year-old Nora Bell of Oahu on Tuesday. She was indicted on two counts of first-degree theft and money laundering last year.
Authorities say Bell, who ran the Classic Residential Care Home in Waianae and another man in 2007 began taking nearly all of the victim’s savings and cashing in his treasury bonds in a scheme lasting for over a year.
Pollack also ordered Bell to repay $135,000 and to be placed on probation for five years after her release.
Pollack also sentenced Bell’s accomplice, Joel Tacras, to six months in jail in December. Tacras also must serve 200 hours of community service and repay the victim $66,000 for his part in the scam.
