Kauai Police Commission Chairman Ernest Kanekoa Jr. says Police Chief Darryl Perry is still on leave pending the investigation into an employee complaint.

Kanekoa made the comment in a joint statement with Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and the Kauai Police Department. Carvalho’s office issued the statement Friday.

Carvalho placed Perry on leave last month, only to have the commission vote that Perry could return to work. When Perry attempted to work, police officers acting under orders from the mayor’s office declined to give Perry his gun, badge and other equipment.

The Kauai County Charter Review Commission on Monday was expected to explore whether Carvalho has the authority to place the chief on leave. But the meeting was canceled due to a lack of quorum.
