Thunderstorm produces waterspouts off Maui

The National Weather Service issued a special marine warning today for windward waters off Maui after a radar showed a thunderstorm producing a waterspouts  north of Oahu and Maui.

One waterspout was seen mid-morning about 58 nautical miles north of Kahului. Radar showed another waterspout about 57 nautical miles northeast of Honolulu at about 1:30 p.m. moving east at a speed of about 5 knots.

Forecasters warned that “thunderstorms can produce sudden waterspouts (which) can easily overturn small boats and create locally hazardous seas.”

The special marine warning was taken down before 3:30 p.m. But a severe thunderstorm watch and gale warning is in effect until 10 p.m. for Hawaiian coastal waters.

Forecasters say winds of 35 knots and waves of 16 feet can be expected tonight with frequent heavy showers and scattered thunderstorms. Thunderstorms may be severe with damaging winds.

A small craft advisory is also in effect for coastal waters.

In addition, a high surf warning is also in effect for east-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii island and a high surf advisory is in effect for north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau and for north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui.i
