WASHINGTON >> Most people on the mainland will get an hour less shuteye tonight.  

For Hawaii residents, it means the time difference between Hawaii and the West Coast will be three hours on Sunday instead of two hours. The East Coast time difference will increase an hour from five hours to six hours.

At 2 a.m. Sunday, daylight saving time, that harbinger of spring, arrives for most mainland states. Those who live in states that observe daylight savings time will turn their clocks ahead — spring forward — before heading to bed Saturday night.

Not every place makes the switch, though. Hawaii, Arizona outside the Navajo Indian territories, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas stay on standard time, which returns Nov. 4, two days before election time.
