Hawaii falls in 5 to BYU in men’s volleyball

Steven Hunt put down 24 kills and JP Marks added 19 but it was not enough as No. 11 Hawaii’s upset bid fell short tonight, with the Warriors losing to No. 4 Brigham Young 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 34-36, 15-12 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Hawaii (7-13, 4-11 MPSF) got 11 digs from Nick Castello and eight aces, including three each by Hunt and Marks.

Kauai High graduate Futi Tavana had 14 kills with no hitting errors on 20 swings and was in on 12 blocks for the Cougars (16-4, 12-3). Kamehameha graduate Jaylen Reyes had 11 digs.

Taylor Sander led BYU with 23 kills while Robb Stowell had a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs. 

In Set 4, Hawaii held off three match points when tying it at 24. The Warriors had 11 set points after that with Marks ending it with an ace.
