A 54-year-old man drowned while spearfishing with his son at Anaehoomalu Bay on Hawaii island today.

The man’s 10-year-old son said he had been fishing with his father but came back to shore due to problems with his mask. He said he was watching his father and noticed that his father did not surface from his location approximately 100 yards offshore.

Fire rescue personnel were called at 11:45 a.m. and searched the area using divers, a rescue boat and a helicopter. The man’s body was located underwater about 100 yards offshore. Rescuers used a net to retrieve the body and return it to shore.

The man was declared dead at the scene.
