Firefighters rescue overdue hiker near Laie

Firefighters rescued a man who was two days overdue on his five-day hike near the Koolau Summit trail Tuesday morning.

Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the man left seven days ago on the Laie Falls trail to go hiking with his dog to the Koolau Summit trail. He intended to hike for five days but the rainy weather hindered his plans, forcing him to stay put in the summit for two more days. Meanwhile, he kept in contact with his friends who last heard from him at about 10 p.m. Monday and told them he felt weak, but was going to try to hike down in the morning.

Friends called 911 Tuesday morning, and a rescue helicopter responded about 8 a.m., located the hiker and brought out the hiker and his dog. The hiker did not suffer any injuries.
