Maui fire officials said a fire that killed seven adult dogs and five puppies in a kennel in Wailuku Sunday was intentionally set.

The fire broke out about 10:38 p.m. Sunday on Moolu Road between Waiolani and Kuikahi streets. Police said it appears the fire began in a 12-by-8-foot storage shed attached to the kennel. The shed had no power source, police said.

The estimated losses totaled $2,000 to the building and $12,000 to the contents, including the dogs, Maui County spokesman Lee Mainaga said.

Maniaga said the dogs were used for hunting and herding. The dogs were of mixed breed, police said.

Mainaga said authorities have no suspects in the case.

Police asked that anyone with information on this incident to call the Maui Police Department at 244-6400 or Crimestoppers at 242-6966.
