Rainbows blast Bulldogs to start WAC play
Breland Almadova went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Zack Swasey was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead Hawaii to an 8-2 victory over Fresno State on Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Rainbows (18-12, 1-0 Western Athletic Confernece) scored five runs in the seventh to win their fifth conference opener in the last six years.
Trevor Podratz went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Pi’ikea Kitamura singled and scored twice for UH, which scored at least eight runs for only the third time this year.
Matt Sisto (5-3) matched a career-high with his fifth win, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings with a season-high tying six strikeouts.
Fresno State starter Tyler Linehan (3-3), who started the game second to Hawaii’s Jarrett Arakawa in the WAC with a 1.47 EA, was tagged for eight runs — seven earned — in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss for the Bulldogs (14-15, 0-1).
Arakawa will start the second game of the series on Friday night for the Rainbows at 6:35.
