A man was killed early this morning when his pickup truck and another vehicle collided on Volcano Road in Mountain View.

Hawaii County firefighters said they were called to the scene at about 1:25 a.m. and found a police officer using chest compressions to try to revive a man who was pinned in the truck.

Firefighters extricated the man from the truck. The man, who had no signs of life, was taken to Hilo Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Hawaii News Now reported that he was 28 years old.

The man was believed to be the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, which was found in the middle of the road with significant front-end damage, officials said.

The second vehicle involved in the accident was found further along the highway, according to firefighters and Pahoa police. No other injuries were reported.

The accident occurred near Kulani Road at the 13.5 mile marker on Volcano Road, or Route 11, which was closed until 4:53 a.m.

Police are investigating the accident and have not released further details.
