Man charged with attempted murder in ‘unprovoked’ attack
A 24-year-old homeless man is charged with second-degree attempted murder in an unprovoked knife attack on another man in Kalihi early Thursday morning.
John Posco Sukuruta, 24, no local address, is also being held on a contempt warrant. Baill is set at $77,000.
Police arrested Sukuruta in Chinatown at 2:05 a.m. — about 45 minutes after an attack on a man who had just parked his car in front of Mayor Wright Homes.
Police said a man approached the 30-year-old man at 1:38 a.m. and without provocation stabbed him on his left cheek two times and then stabbed him two more times on his left shoulder while cussing at him.
Patrol officers found the suspect on North King Street at 2:05 a.m. Witnesses positively identified the suspect. A knife was found in the area just a few feet away from where the suspect was detained.
Sukurta has two petty misdemeanor theft and one criminal property damage convictions.

Paramedics took the victim to a hospital in serious condition with several stab wounds. He was later upgraded to stable condition.
It was the third stabbing at or near the public housing complex in the past year.
