Residents to be evacuated for boulder work in Kalihi
A Honolulu street beneath a hillside where boulders tumbled down onto houses earlier this month will be evacuated this weekend while a contractor removes unstable rocks still perched on the slope.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources said Friday residents of 11 nearby homes in Kalihi will be evacuated between 6:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.
A contractor will demolish and remove two large boulders and other smaller boulders from the hill.
Boulders crashed into several houses on April 12, leaving two uninhabitable and forcing 12 homes to be evacuated. None one was injured.
The state is removing the rocks because the private owners of the land say they don’t have the money, and because the state believes doing so is in the interest of public safety.
