Hit-run driver who killed bicyclist sentenced to 10 years
The hit-and-run driver who killed 18-year-old bicyclist Zachary Manago was sentenced this afternoon to 10 years in prison.
Circuit Judge Edward H. Kubo Jr. imposed the maximum penalty for Army Sgt. Douglas Curtis. Kubo ordered Curtis to turn himself in on May 25 to begin serving his sentence.
The Hawaii Paroling Authority will decide later how much of the 10-year sentence Curtis, 26, must serve before he is eligible for parole.
A sport utility vehicle driven by Curtis struck and killed Manago Dec. 17, 2010 on Kamehameha Highway near Wheeler Army Airfield as Manago and a group of friends were on an overnight, around-the-island bike ride. Curtis left the scene but Manago’s friends found the SUV three days later and reported it to police.
Kubo also ordered Curtis to contribute $500 to a state fund for victims of neurotrauma and to pay Manago’s mother $4,233 in restitution for her son’s funeral expenses.
