Man charged with attempted murder in Hawaii island shooting

Hawaii island police have charged a 72-year-old Puna man with one count of first-degree attempted murder and two of second-degree attempted murder for a shooting Sunday at a Panaewa home.

Officers responding to a 5:27 p.m. Sunday call, found a 55-year-old woman with gunshot wounds. Police said an investigation showed Joseph Amormino shot the woman and fired at another person in the home.

Police arrested Amormino at the scene. He also was charged with weapons offenses.

Fire rescue personnel took the woman to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was in stable condition.

Police also charged him with three counts of terroristic threatening in an unrelated incident 20 minutes before the shooting.

Amormino allegedly waved a handgun at a 52-year-old woman, a 48-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl — all of Mountain View — after allegedly tailgating their vehicle on Highway 130 near the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.

His bail was set at $656,000.
