Man arrested for allegedly taking $100,000 bag of jewelry left in elevator

A 28-year-old man was arrested today after he took a bag containing $100,000 in jewelry that was accidentally left behind in an elevator in Waikiki, police said.

Police said a 76-year-old woman was moving bags from an elevator when the elevator doors closed with the woman’s bag of jewelry still inside about 9:50 a.m. Tuesday.

The woman went to another floor to catch the elevator, but it had already moved on. By the time she got back into the elevator, her bag was missing.

Police said a surveillance camera captured the man taking the woman’s bag from the elevator and leaving.

Officers arrested the man today for investigation of first-degree theft after he was spotted in the same area.

Police said the bag and jewelry had not been recovered.
