Girl, 12, is critically injured by falling rock in Mokuleia
A 12-year-old girl was taken the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition after she was struck on the head with a rock while on a hike in Mokuleia near Camp Erdman Monday morning.
The girl was with a group of hikers and were getting a safety briefing at the base of a cliff between Mokuleia and Kaena Point known as "the Climbing Wall" when the rock struck her head and knocked her unconscious at about 10:30 a.m., said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.
The girl had not yet put on any gear and did not have a helmet on, Seelig said.
Emergency medical personnel and firefighters put her in a stretcher-like basket and she rode by helicopter to a landing zone at Camp Erdman where she was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
