Kula residents evacuate ahead of brush fire

Maui firefighters are battling two fires this afternoon, and authorities have evacuated residents on Hapapa Road in Kula due to a brush fire that has damaged three homes.

There was roof damage to one of the homes, and the extent of damage on the others was unknown, officials said this afternoon.

Occupants were evacuated, Maui officials said in a press release.

The fire continues to burn, and has scorched six acres. Fire crews and three helicopters from Kula, Makawao, Kahului, and Kihei are battling the blaze.

The evacuations have affected residents on Hapapa Road with house numbers above 156. Authorities did not say how many have been asked to leave their homes, but said Civil Defense has been notified.

An earlier fire in the Olinda area is reported to be about 40 percent contained this afternoon.

That fire was burning in an area above the Kahakapao Reservoirs into the forest reserve.

Officials report the blaze was in “heavy timber” and wind gusts up to 40 mph were fanning the flames.
