Mo-ped driver who died after falling off cliff is identified

BRUCE ASATO
Police closed Kalanianaole Highway near Lanai Lookout on Wednesday to investigate an accident in which a mo-ped rider struck a guardrail and was thrown over the cliff onto a rocky shelf below. Officers loaded the victim's mo-ped into a police car, above. At left, Honolulu Police Lt. Bobby Towne of the traffic division looked over the cliff at the site where the driver fell.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the mo-ped driver who died Wednesday after falling down a cliff near Lanai Lookout as David Suzuki-Ung of Honolulu.

Suzuki-Ung, 52, died of head injuries from the mo-ped crash and the fall, the Examiner’s Office said Friday.

Police said Suzuki-Ung was heading toward town on Kalanianaole Highway about 2 p.m. Wednesday when he lost control and veered into a guardrail just before Lanai Lookout. He was thrown and fell about 100 feet down the side of the cliff.

Police say Suzuki-Ung, who was not wearing a helmet, may have been speeding.
