Homesteaders win farming grant

Erika Engle

Waimea Hawaiian Homesteaders’ Association Inc. has won a $45,000 grant for its “Farming for the Working Class” program.

The program enables Native Hawaiians to farm fallow land, through hands-on training, classroom learning and business training.

The system used by Wow Farm to develop a productive greenhouse will be taught to participants who will grow crops to eat and sell.

The grant was among 11 made by First Nations Development Institute, which serves rural and reservation-based Native American communities, and was funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Mich.
