Hawaii island tenant: Landlord may have killed man in self-defense

A tenant of a Hawaii island man charged with murder said the stabbing may have been in self-defense.

Detectives have charged Daniel Schuster, 49, with second-degree murder in the Sunday stabbing of Joshua Trickel, 30.

Trickel was found face-down in a pool of blood in Schuster’s Honomu home.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported that according to court documents, the tenant told police that Trickel stabbed Schuster first. Documents say Schuster had an injury to his left forearm.

Last year, Schuster had filed for a temporary restraining order claiming Trickel trashed Schuster’s home.

Schuster is being held on $104,000 bail and could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
