A 60-year-old Japanese visitor apparently drowned Monday in waters fronting a Kailua-Kona resort, Hawaii County police said.

Police said resort personnel and bystanders pulled an unconscious man who had been snorkeling from the water and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Police officers assisted with CPR until fire personnel arrived at Royal Kona Resort, 75-5852 Alii Drive.

The man was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The man’s name is being withheld pending family notification. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, police said.
