Norman Salva struggled to speak about the driver who hit and killed his wife near her apartment Tuesday night before fleeing.

He wondered if his wife could have gotten help sooner if the driver had stopped.

“I never see my wife (before she died),” Salva, 40, said. “I want him to surrender.”

Salva said his wife was walking to her night job as a clerk at Aloha gas station a block away from her street across Kamehameha Highway. She got the job about a month ago because the kids were getting older and she could work at night while her husband was home from his produce job at a supermarket, her husband said. 

Police said a northbound pickup truck, possibly a white Ford, hit Salva as she was crossing Kamehameha Highway in a marked crosswalk south of Pahia Road about 9:30 p.m.

The truck drove off toward Windward Mall, police said. It might have front-end damage, police said.

Paramedics took Salva in critical condition to Castle Medical Center, where she died, police said.

Police closed Kamehameha Highway between Keaahala Road and Kahuhipa Street in both directions until about 1:30 a.m. while they investigated the crash.

Salva’s death was the 42nd traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 32 at the same time last year.
