Police opened an arson case after firefighters determined a Thursday brush fire in Waialua was intentionally set.

The fire began in the area across from Waialua District Park and Kukea Circle about 2 p.m. Thursday and scorched fallow agricultural land, Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

About 40 firefighters contained the fire about 4:40 p.m.

Seelig said after speaking with people in the area a fire investigator determined the fire was intentionally set and notified police.

“It appears to have started near the bus stop on Goodale (Avenue),” he said.

The 30-acre fire came as close as 50 feet to farm storage buildings and about 100 feet from homes on Kukea, Seelig said.

The fire did not cause any evacuation of residents or any road closures.
