Former state Rep. Sam Aiona to run for Council seat vacated by Tulsi Gabbard
Former state Rep. Sam Aiona said he will file today to run for the vacant Honolulu City Council District 6 seat.
Incumbent Tulsi Gabbard resigned earlier this month after winning the Democratic primary for the Second Congressional seat, leaving two years remaining on her term.
Aiona, 46, is a Republican who last held a House seat in 1998 and has run unsuccessfully in several other elections since.
He is the third former elected official to vie for the Council seat. Former city Councilman Jon Yoshimura and outgoing state Sen. Carol Fukunaga have already filed to run.
Eight others have also filed nomination papers.
Friday is the deadline to file for the winner-take-all, non-partisan special election taking place in conjunction with the Nov. 6 general election.
