Honolulu Fire Department inspectors have approved the fire safety system at Republik Nightclub, two week after hundreds of people were turned away from an Aug. 30 concert at the former China House restaurant site on Kapiolani Boulevard.

A concert by Chevelle was scheduled at the venue Saturday night.

Fire Capt. Carlton Yamada said inspectors tested the venue’s fire alarm and automatic sprinkler system.

Fire inspectors are allowing up to 1,000 people, but nightclub owners have not completed their permit application with the city Department of Planning and Permitting regarding their occupancy load type, he said.

“Fire inspectors are not going to stand in the way because of that,” Yamada said Saturday.
