Water service was restored to about a dozen homes near Lime Street in McCully after repairs were completed to an 8-inch water main break Wednesday night.
The leak caused water to pick up sediment along the way, washing into the storm drain, which leads to the Ala Wai Canal, and turned the water into a milky gray.
Filters were installed to prevent debris from entering the storm drain.
A crew, which arrived at 3:26 p.m., repaired the break at 10 p.m. and water service restored, the Board of Water Supply reported.
An underground leak in an adjacent water main caused water to enter the Ala Wai through the same drain, causing a similar discoloration to the water.
The Fire department sent a hazardous materials team, which determined the milky gray water was caused by the water main break washing sediment into the canal and not a chemical.
