Search suspended for missing Coast Guardsman

After three days of extensive searching, the Coast Guard and Fire and Police departments are suspending their search for a 36-year-old Coast Guardsman stationed at Air Station Barbers Point.

After searching 10,000 square miles, the exhaustive search was suspended 6 p.m. Friday.

Petty Officer 1st Class Russell Matthews, an aviation survival technician, was last seen Tuesday. Police recovered his car Wednesday morning at a Kaena Point parking lot.

Police said Matthews had been emotionally distraught.

The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter, two cutters and a C-130 plane. It also used four self-locating datum marker buoys to identify search areas. The Navy also assisted with a plane.

The Honolulu Fire Department used its helicopter and ground crews to search the coastline and offshore waters, and from the shoreline to the cliff base and into ravines in Mokuleia and from Kaena Point to Kalaeloa.
