Hilo man charged after police officer hit by car, injured
Hawaii County authorities have charged a Hilo driver who allegedly ran into and injured a police officer directing traffic Tuesday in Hilo.
The officer was treated at Hilo Medical Center for a minor injury and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.
Robert Bungula, 44, was charged Wednesday afternoon with failure to render aid and failure to obey a police officer. His bail was set at $1,500.
Police said the reserve police officer was directing traffic in a construction zone at the intersection of Kalanianaole and Silva streets in the Keaukaha area of Hilo when a Mazda sedan approached in a reckless manner about 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The officer, standing on the right shoulder of Silva Street, extended his hands to signal the driver to stop. The car did not stop, hit the officer’s left leg and drove away, police said.
Police arrested Bungala Wednesday morning.
