Ocean rescues keep crews busy on Kauai
Kauai lifeguards rescued two people in separate incidents along the island’s North Shore Sunday.
Around 1:15 p.m., a 16-year-old North Shore boy jumped into the water near the edge of Queen’s Bath and was sucked out to sea. The boy waited outside the breakwater until lifeguards arrived and brought him to the Hanalei tower. The boy sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment.
About a half-hour later, a 32-year-old visitor from Wyoming was swept out to sea while wading in waters between Haena Beach Park and Kee Beach. A lifeguard reached the woman using a jet ski and transported her to Tunnels Beach, where she was treated for minor injuries.
Officials from the Kauai Fire Department, which assisted in both rescues, warned beachgoers to exercise caution as strong winter swells feed hazardous ocean conditions along the North Shore.
