Rainbows win basketball opener
Christian Standhardinger scored a game-high 27 points in his Hawaii debut as UH beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 76-64 in the season-opening men’s college basketball game for both schools Friday.
UH announced 5,674 tickets issued for the game at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hauns Brereton scored 20 of his career-high 24 points in the first half. Brereton was hot from the outset, making 3-pointers on Hawaii’s first three shots to give the Rainbows a 9-2 lead.
UH never trailed.
Freshman Isaac Fotu was game-high with 15 rebounds in his college debut. He scored four points.
Hawaii senior center Vander Joaquim, an all-WAC performer last season, did not start due to a knee injury. But he came off the bench to contribute 11 points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes.

Brandon Spearman added 10 points for Hawaii, and Jace Tavita had nine assists.
Troy Snyder led the Hawks with 17 points and Ishaq Pitt added 15 and Francis Ezeiru 10.
Hawaii led 39-29 at halftime.
The Rainbows host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday at 5 p.m.
