Illinois edges Hawaii with OT buzzer bomb

D.J. Richardson hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 1/10th of a second lef in overtime, giving Illinois a thrilling 78-77 men’s college basketball win over host Hawaii on Friday.

Vander Joaquim scored 22 points for UH, including the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime and the buzzer beater to get there. But it wasn’t enough for the Rainbow Warriors.

Brandon Paul scored 25 points and Tracy Abrams 22 to lead the Illini.

Hawaii fell to 3-1 while Illinois improved to 3-0 with its program’s seventh win with no losses against UH. A crowd of around 6,500 saw it at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Joaquim had five points in overtime to give UH a 74-69 lead.

Jace Tavita’s free throw made it 77-75, and Illinois got the ball with 7.5 seconds left, setting up Richardson’s heroics.

Richardson scored 16 points.

UH’s Brandon Spearman, a junior guard from Chicago, added 20 points against his home-state team.

Joaquim hit a 17-footer at the buzzer to tie it at 66 in regulation after Spearman missed the front end of a one-and-one wiht 5.8 seconds left and Christian Standhardinger’s shot off the rebound was blocked into the second row.

Hawaii led most of the game, but the lead changed five times in the last three minutes — the last on Paul’s 3-pointer with 1:27 left to give the Illini a 66-64 lead.

Hawaii built an early 21-7 lead with Spearman contributing seven points, and UH lead 41-28 at halftime.
