No widespread tsunami from large quake in northern Pacific

A large earthquake off Russia’s Kuril Island did not generate a large-scale tsunami, Pacific Tsunami Warning Center officials said this morning.

The magnitude-6.4 quake occurred at 5:12 a.m. Saturday near the epicenter (8:12 a.m. today in Hawaii) at a depth of 37 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered 104 miles south of the Kuril Islands.

While it did not generate a widespread tsunami, officials at the warning center in Ewa Beach said quakes of this size can generate local tsunamis within about 100 kilometers of the epicenter,
