2012 July 18 - CTY - Big Island police are searching for a man wanted for attempted murder. The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Jarvis Naoki Higa of Hilo. At 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of a man threatening a 34-year-old Hilo man with a firearm. One of two men who escaped from Hilo’s Hawaii Community Correctional Center was captured in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision in Kau Friday evening.

Jarvis Naoki Higa, 35, was arrested about 8:15 p.m., the Department of Public Safety and Hawaii County police said.

A team of about 15 officers converged on a home near Paradise Parkway, said police Capt. Robert Wagner, head of Hilo patrol. Several people fled from the house on foot, including Higa, he said.

Higa was captured a short distance away by the team of officers from the Hilo, Kona and Kau districts, as well as state deputy sheriffs.

Wagner said they began looking for Higa in Ocean View, a large subdivision just south of Manuka State Park, earlier Friday after receiving a tip from a reliable source.

Higa was taken to the Hilo police station for processing.

Ryan James Jeffries-Hamar, 31, remains at large.

The two men escaped from the Hilo jail Wednesday morning after overpowering and assaulting a corrections officer and taking off in the jail librarian’s car.
