UH announces Ohio State’s Jay as new athletic director
Ben Jay, Ohio State’s executive associate athletic director for finance and operations, has been named the University of Hawaii’s athletic director, school officials announced Friday.
“I am delighted that Ben is joining us as UH athletics director, and know that he will be a great addition to our Manoa ‘ohana with his vision and strong finance, accounting and compliance background,” Manoa chancellor Tom Apple said n a news release. Apple chose Jay over University of California at Berkeley official Solomon “Solly” Fulp.
An 11-member search committee recommended Jay and Fulp as finalists to Apple. UH president M.R.C. Greenwood still needs to sign off on the choice. After that, UH will announce Jay’s official start date, length of contract and salary, the release said.
Jay and Fulp were in town this week for face-to-face meetings with UH officials and coaches.
Jim Donovan was athletic director for more than four years when he was removed from the position in July. UH vice president Rockne Freitas has been serving as acting athletic director. Freitas, who returned today from a speaking engagement in New Zealand, did not apply for the job.
