Wahine outside hitter Hartong named first-team All-American

University of Hawaii junior Emily Hartong earned an All-American promotion today, getting named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association first team. Hartong, from Los Alamitos, Calif., was a second-team selection last year. She was also Big West Player of the Year this season.

UH setter Mita Uiato, also a junior, earned All-American honorable mention.

Hartong gets her award Friday in Louisville, Ky., at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year banquet.

This season she became the first Rainbow Wahine in six years to earn AVCA National Player of the Week (Oct. 30). After playing middle her first two seasons, Hartong moved outside this year and ranks seventh nationally in kills (4.66 per set).

Hartong helped the Wahine go unbeaten in their return to the Big WestConference and construct a 20-match win streak. That ended in Seattle 11days ago when eighth-ranked Hawaii fell to fifth-ranked Washington in theNCAA Championship’s second round. Hartong had 30 kills and 14 digs in thatfive-set match, which ended UH’s season at 27-3.
