All lanes of Farrington Highway near Kahe power plant are now clear following a crash that killed a man who was walking across the road before dawn this morning.

The man, who was 60 and was homeless, was trying to cross the highway from the beach side toward the power plant at about 5:10 a.m. when he was struck by a pickup truck, said Lt. Robert Towne of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division.

Towne said several cars swerved to avoid him but a Ford F-250 pickup truck in the left, Honolulu-bound lane, driven by a woman in her 40s, was not able to stop in time. There was no sign that the woman, who was driving a company truck, was intoxicated.

Police noted that the victim was wearing dark clothing at the time and that the area does not have street lights. He was not in a marked crosswalk but he was walking near the vehicular entrance to the Kahe Point beach park, Towne said. 

The area has a 45-mile-an-hour speed limit.

Police contraflowed traffic in the area shortly after the crash, backing up morning rush-hour traffic in both directions for several hours even after the scene was cleared about 8 a.m.

The death is the first on Oahu roads in 2013. There were no deaths at this point in 2012.
