University of Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay announced today that all UH men’s intercollegiate sports teams would be nicknamed Warriors and all women’s teams Rainbow Wahine beginning July 1.

Jay announced the decision this afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium just as the baseball team took the field for practice.

The baseball team was the only men’s team to specifically go by Rainbows without any mention of Warriors.

"In terms of the change for our teams, we’re going to probably implement that immediately," Jay said.

A UH spokesperson clarified later this afternoon that the actual change won’t take place until the July 1 deadline, saying, "We’re going to start the process of changing the nickname but it’s not going to take effect until July 1."
