KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) — Rwandan President Paul Kagame says he is not interested in running for a third term when his term ends in 2017.

Kagame on Wednesday blamed the media for starting a debate on whether Kagame would seek to alter the constitution and run for another term.

On Feb. 8 Kagame met the National Executive Committee of his political party and directed them to plot the way forward for the country after 2017, fueling speculation he had asked the party to study how he could serve a third term.

Kagame at a press conference Wednesday said he is not interested in another term.

An opposition political party, FDU-Inkingi, said in a statement this week that it condemned any maneuvers by Kagame to amend the constitution and run for a third term.
