A group called "Joggin’ for Frogmen" will be running in Sunday’s Hapalua half-marathon and collection donations for the family of a Navy SEAL who went missing during a training exercise off Kaena Point last month.
Dr. Jim Barahal, president of the Honolulu Marathon and founder of The Hapalua, said all money donated this week to the race’s Joggin’ for Frogmen fundraising team will go directly to the widow of 33-year-old Matthew John Leathers of Woodland, Calif., and his three children, all under the age of 10. Barahal gave $1,000 on behalf of the marathon association. So far, nearly $10,000 has been collected for the family.
Leathers went missing when he was separated from his unit while training off Kaena Point two weeks ago. The search was suspended 10 days ago.
The start of the Hapalua is at Waikiki Beach by the Duke Kahanamoku statue.
