Boulder damages carport and vehicles in Hawaii Kai
A boulder the size of a Volkswagen Beetle crashed into a Hawaii Kai apartment complex carport this morning.
Fire Capt. Carlton Yamada said firefighters helped shore up the posts to stabilize the carport.
Yamada said the boulder came down the side of a mountain at 6:48 a.m. at 430 Haleloa Place, and damaged the carport and a minivan and car parked inside.
No one was injured. The rock split in half before coming to rest.
Fire officials estimated the damage to the Honda Odyssey at $20,000, $8,000 to a Toyota Corolla, and $2,000 to the posts and a beam in the carport.
There were no mandatory evacuations, but residents were given the number to Red Cross if they felt unsafe, Yamada said.

The association of apartment owners said the area the boulder came from likely is their property, but will investigate further, Yamada said.
