HECO warns customers of phone scam
Hawaiian Electric Co. is warning customers about an apparent scam involving telephone calls claiming people are behind on their electric bills.
The utility said Tuesday customers have reported they’re being told to make payments on their electric bills at retail stores using specific debit card services.
The scammer is telling customers to provide a confirmation number granting the scammer access to customer funds.
Hawaiian Electric is reminding customers not to provide their personal, confidential, or financial information to any unidentified individual. It’s urging customers to be cautious when responding to phone calls.
The company suggests asking for the caller’s name, phone number and company name to deter any leading questions.
Hawaiian Electric is urging customers to report any suspicious activity to the Honolulu Police Department.
