Kauai man sentenced in sex assault of minor

A 52-year-old Kauai man was sentenced to two concurrent five-year prison terms Wednesday for sexually assaulting a girl 11 years ago.

Jonathan Espejo Reyes, of Lihue, was charged with 21 counts of sexual assault in 2002, The Garden Island reported.

Reyes was arraigned on Aug. 13, 2012. The original charges included two counts of sexual assault against a minor, 15 counts of first-degree sexual assault, and four counts of attempted first-degree sexual assault.

He pleaded no contest to two counts of amended third-degree sexual assault on Jan. 2.

The victim was a minor at the time of the sexual assault and has since enlisted in the military.

Kauai County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Arin says one consideration for the plea deal was to avoid putting the victim through the trauma of having to testify at a trial.
